NWUAV generators are designed such that the engine RPM follows the electrical load. The unit will idle when there is no electrical load and run at high RPM at maximum load. Loads in-between zero and maximum shall result in just enough RPM to meet the demand. This type of load following minimizes fuel usage and noise.
As the electrical load to the generator can increase instantly but the alternator RPM cannot, we develop a means of storing sufficient power to supplement the input to the DC-AC inverter while the alternator spins up. The output from the DC-DC converter charges a battery or super-cap. The battery or super-cap provides sufficient short-term capacity to meet zero-to-maximum load changes. When the load increases, the energy stored in the short-term capacity makes up the difference in the power required versus what the alternator can instantaneously provide. The Controller/EMU senses the change in electrical load and commands an increase in engine RPM. Within a few seconds, the alternator produces the necessary power to maintain the load and recharge the capacity of the battery or super-cap.
